What documents you need to file your taxes in 2027

Having everything ready before you start avoids mistakes and refund delays. This checklist follows the IRS recommendations for the 2026 return you file in 2027.

By César Hernández · Updated

To identify yourself

  • A current photo ID.
  • The Social Security card of everyone on the return: you, your spouse and your dependents. A number with one wrong digit delays processing.
  • Last year’s return, if you have it.
  • If the IRS assigned you an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), the CP01A letter or your six-digit number.

Income from a job

  • The W-2 forms from every employer you had in 2026.
  • If a W-2 does not arrive or has an error, ask the employer for a correction as soon as possible.

Other income: 1099 forms

  • 1099-NEC: self-employment work. For payments made in 2026 it is sent from $2,000.
  • 1099-K: payment apps and platforms, when you received over $20,000 in more than 200 transactions in 2026.
  • 1099-INT and 1099-DIV: interest and dividends.
  • 1099-R and SSA-1099: retirement and Social Security benefits.
  • 1099-G: unemployment and other government payments.
  • 1099-DA: digital asset sales made through a broker in 2026.

Even if no form arrives, the income is still reported. If you were self-employed, also bring your own record of income and expenses.

Health coverage

If you had Marketplace coverage (HealthCare.gov), bring Form 1095-A. It is needed to reconcile the premium tax credit.

For deductions and credits

  • Child care: the provider’s name, address and identification number, and how much you paid.
  • Education: Form 1098-T and receipts for the expenses.
  • If you itemize: mortgage interest (Form 1098), property taxes and donations.
  • New for 2026: the tips and overtime amounts shown on your W-2 or in your records, and if you bought a new car with a loan, the lender’s interest statement and the VIN.

To pay or get your refund

  • Your bank routing and account numbers, for direct deposit.
  • The estimated payments you made during 2026, with dates and amounts.

If your refund includes the earned income tax credit (EITC) or the additional child tax credit, the IRS does not issue it before mid-February.
